Stressed? Get on the Herbs

Stressed? Get on the Herbs

Bev Dunne

I’m sure most of us feel a little anxious or stressed at times, which is quite normal. In fact, it can even be beneficial on occasions, such as when faced with a dangerous situation. However, if you are experiencing stress or anxiety outside of these times, distress and dysfunction can in fact manifest in the body, which can then become a problem if left unchecked. However, it is important to realise, before anxiety reaches this stage, there is an effective natural, treatment option available in the form of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM).

Along with counselling, relaxation, gentle exercise and good nutrition this ancient art of healing can provide relief from mild anxiety and irritability, moodiness and despondency, mental stress and tension, nervousness and restlessness, tiredness and fatigue, and nervous dyspepsia. To assist in the management of stress and anxiety, promote tranquillity, conserve energy and enhance mental function, we often suggest a herbal combination of Withania somnifera, Magnolia officinalis, Poria cocos, Polygala sibirica and Citrus reticulate in tablet form.

Stress and anxiety can stem from a variety of causes and can manifest in numerous ways. For example, stress and anxiety often go hand in hand with insomnia, which can be addressed by adding a sleep formula with the herbs Zizyphus spinosa, Passiflora incarnate, Albizia julibrissin, Polygala sibirica, Poria cocos, Biota orientalis and Schizandra chinensis to your wellness regime. Insomnia is quite often hard to treat however we have found this combination of herbs to be one of the most effective sleep formulas we stock in our store, especially if it is taken in combination with a stress formula.

Certain nutrients also play a key role in reducing stress and anxiety and should not be underestimated. Look for an advanced multivitamin formula containing high levels of the B vitamin group, together with the amino acid theanine to help calm and settle the mind. I have suggested B Vitamins previously for this problem, as they are a great nutrient to the nervous system. A herbal memory formula can improve mental performance, help clear the mind of clutter, negative thoughts as well as give the mind more clarity. The best formulas will include the herbs Bacopa monnieri, Ginkgo biloba, Centella asiatica, Eleutherococcus senticosis, Schizandra chinensis and Cola acuminate. Stress and memory loss quite often go hand in hand.

One more example of how you can nurture your body back to optimal health would be to include immune tonic herbs to your wellness regime. Herbs such as Astragalus membranaceus, Codonopsis pilosula, Ganoderma lucidum, Eleutherococcus senticosus, Atractylodes macrocephala, Ligustrum lucidum, Schizandra chinensis and Glycyrrhiza uralensis are an excellent choice for supporting you during difficult times of stress, emotional strain and anxiety. How often do you hear someone say they always get a cold or flu when they are stressed. It’s not rocket science!! When we are stressed we put a huge strain on our immune system.

These are but a few examples of the many combinations of herbal formulas available. We believe when choosing formulas, we should take the time to talk to our customers, obtaining as much information as we can about their health issues. By combining natural medicines like this we can create a tailor made solution specific to your own health needs. Just because a bottle is labelled “Stress”, it doesn’t mean that particular formula is the best option for your needs. We know Christmas is just around the corner and with that seems to come a bucketload of stress. Now is the time to begin supplementing with herbs which may help address the stress and anxiety which unfortunately, for some, becomes part and parcel of this ‘silly season’.
