Get High On Health With Hemp

Sofia Keady

There has been much talk of late about the health benefits of hemp seeds. To avoid any confusion, however, I must clarify: the hemp seeds I am writing about do not contain THC, the psychoactive compound found in marijuana. While marijuana and hemp both originate from the Cannabis sativa plant species, they belong to entirely different varieties selectively bred for distinct purposes. So, no- you are not going to get high from hemp seeds, but you certainly are going to get healthy!

Many experts consider hemp seeds to be among the most nutritious seeds in the world, and I could totally understand why. They offer a dense matrix of macro- and micronutrients, containing:

  • A concentrated balance of easily digestible proteins that rival or exceed traditional animal sources like eggs, meat, or dairy.
  • An exceptional source of essential fatty acids (EFAs), including Omega-3, Omega-6, and Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA).
  • Minimal starches, virtually no trans or saturated fats, and almost zero carbohydrates.
  • High concentrations of Vitamin E and B-complex vitamins, including folate.
  • Trace amounts of Vitamin D3 - making it a unique plant-based dietary inclusion.
  • Essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
  • Phytosterols, which assist in cholesterol management.
  • A healthy blend of both soluble and insoluble dietary fibre.

Hemp protein is a comprehensive source featuring 20 amino acids, crucially including all nine essential amino acids that our bodies cannot synthesize independently. Roughly 65% of hemp seed protein is composed of edestin, a globulin protein unique to hemp that is exceptionally easy for the human digestive system to process. The remaining fraction largely consists of albumin, another highly digestible globular protein. This unique protein structure makes hemp an ideal nutritional choice for individuals with sensitive digestion who struggle with other protein supplements.

Because our bodies cannot manufacture essential fatty acids (EFAs), we must obtain them through our diet. Nutritional science suggests an optimal Omega-6 to Omega-3 dietary ratio of roughly 3:1—a balance that hemp seeds naturally possess. Maintaining this balance helps regulate immune responses and mitigate systemic inflammation, which is vital for managing inflammatory conditions such as arthritis.

Furthermore, hemp seeds are rich in the amino acid arginine, which promotes the production of nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps dilate and relax blood vessels, contributing to lower blood pressure and a reduced risk of cardiovascular complications.

For a quick morning energy boost, toss a tablespoon of hemp seeds into your morning smoothie or muesli for a gut-cleansing, protein-rich start. For healthy cooking and skincare, cold-pressed hemp oil can be whisked into dressings, drizzled over warm grains, or used as a soothing natural moisturizer for dry skin. Additionally, hemp protein powder carries an earthy, nutty flavour that integrates easily into baking recipes and recovery shakes.
