Health Benefits of A Vegan Diet

Sofia Keady

This November, as World Vegan Month rolls around, I find myself reflecting on what veganism really means and why so many people are choosing this lifestyle. You might be surprised to learn that The Vegan Society has been around since 1944, working to raise awareness about a way of living that benefits not just us, but animals and the planet too.

People come to veganism for all sorts of reasons. For some, it’s about health. For others, it’s about compassion; choosing to avoid meat, fish, dairy, and even honey to support the wellbeing of animals. And it goes beyond food, many vegans opt for clothing, shoes, bags, and cosmetics that are completely animal-free.

Then there’s the environmental side. Factory farming has a huge impact on the planet, and for those concerned about climate change, plant-based eating can feel like a small but meaningful step toward helping our Earth.

Health-wise, a vegan diet can be incredibly nourishing. Focusing on plants means more fibre, more nutrients, and less saturated fat. Many people find it helps them maintain a healthy weight, supports heart health, and may even lower the risk of Type 2 Diabetes. Fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains are all packed with vitamins, minerals, and protective compounds that can support long-term wellbeing.

And let’s be honest, being vegan doesn’t mean living on carrot sticks! Today, there’s a whole world of delicious options: dairy-free cheeses, butters, yoghurts, ice creams, and endless plant-based protein choices.

It’s worth keeping an eye on a few key nutrients, though:

  • Iron: Found in spinach, legumes, dried fruit - best absorbed when paired with Vitamin C.
  • Vitamin B12: Mainly in animal foods; nutritional yeast helps, but supplementation is often needed.
  • Calcium: Leafy greens, tofu, tahini, chia seeds, almonds, or fortified plant-based milks.
  • Zinc: Seeds, nuts, beans, oats, and nutritional yeast are great sources.
  • Omega-3s: Chia, flax, hemp, walnuts, or vegan algae-based supplements.

Veganism isn’t just a diet. It’s a way to align our choices with our values, support our health, and show care for the world around us. And honestly, with so many tasty options now, it’s easier than ever to give it a go, even if it’s just for a day, a week, or the whole month! Also, our Naturopath Katie Urbanik has written a fantastic vegan whole food recipe book, available for purchase in our store!
