Charcoal for Detox And Flatulence
Christmas is just around the corner, and with all the delicious food and celebrations, it’s easy to overindulge. Many of us end up dealing with a little extra wind or bloating; and believe it or not, charcoal can actually help! Yes, charcoal and no, I haven’t lost the plot! I’m definitely not suggesting scraping a few spoonfuls from the barbeque the next time you’re feeling gassy.
Activated charcoal has been used for generations as a natural way to ease excess stomach and intestinal gas. This medicinal form is carefully refined, purified, and then activated at high temperatures to make it safe and effective.
For many people, activated charcoal is a bit of a lifesaver. It works by drawing in excess gas from the stomach and bowel. The gas binds to the charcoal and is then carried out of the body, helping relieve indigestion, heartburn, flatulence, and general digestive discomfort.
Activated charcoal also binds to chemicals and toxins in the gut and bowel, making it a gentle support for detoxification. This process is called adsorption, meaning the toxins stick to the surface of the charcoal rather than being absorbed into the body. Just a heads up: this may lead to black stools, which can be surprising but is completely normal.
As the charcoal travels through your digestive tract, it gathers toxins along the way -from food, environmental exposure, and everyday life. To help your body clear all of this out, make sure you drink plenty of water and include some soluble fibre to keep everything moving smoothly.
Because of its ability to bind toxins, activated charcoal is sometimes used in Emergency Rooms for certain types of poisoning, though in much larger doses than you’d ever use at home.
One blend I particularly love combines activated charcoal with ginger and peppermint. Ginger is known to help with bloating, flatulence, IBS, colic, and sluggish digestion by stimulating digestive acids and improving nutrient absorption. Peppermint has its own soothing qualities, helping ease bloating, indigestion, and digestive spasms by relaxing the gut. Together, they create a wonderfully supportive formula for easing tummy troubles.
You may have even seen charcoal powder popping up in smoothies and sourdoughs lately, it’s definitely having a moment!
Just one important note: if you’re taking prescription medications, activated charcoal can reduce their effectiveness, so be sure to take it at least 2–3 hours away from your medications.
As we head into the festive season, it’s all about enjoying the celebrations while giving our bodies a little extra care. If tummy troubles tend to creep in this time of year, activated charcoal especially when paired with soothing herbs like ginger and peppermint might be a gentle support worth considering.
